Lot 1129
1801. NGC graded AU-50. Here is a very high grade coin which is seldom offered this well preserved and especially this attractive. Lightly toned with steel gray overall, deeper tones around the rims and brighter at the centers. The devices are accented by the toning, which adds to the eye appeal. Bold and beautiful, with strong separation on Liberty's curls as well as the eagle's wing feathers. The surfaces are pleasing too, with only a few minimal nicks and handling marks noted under careful scrutiny. Only 30,289 struck. Pop 4; 11 finer at NGC. Value $9,000 - 10,000

1812, 2 over 1. Small 8. Overton-102, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-64+. A glorious example of this scarce overdate and a coin which is rarely found so close to the gem grade. Hence we expect this one to receive considerable attention when it crosses the block, for its is not only stunning in quality, but a handsomely toned example as well. Lovely rainbow toning with deeper blue around the rims fading to lighter russet and gold at the centers, on both sides. Well struck too, and a downright impressive example of this early Capped Bust half dollar. Pop 1; 1 finer in 65+. (PCGS # 39443) Value $10,000 - UP

Lot 1134
1819, 9 over 8. Large 9. PCGS graded MS-65. Here is a condition rarity as well as one of the finest examples of this popular overdate we have handled. The strike is bold and precise, with each of the stars sharp along with the finer details on Liberty's hair curls. The reverse is a perfect match in terms of quality and strike. Toned with deeper lilac and gray around the periphery as well as outlinging the devices as seen on carefully stored coins from old time collections. What is really striking is when the surfaces are examined and their incredible nature is revealed. Usually coins have a peppering of small handling marks, but not so here, this one is simply amazing to behold, with gem level fields and devices apparent. Amazing eye appeal and fantastic quality! Well struck and nicely toned. Pop 5; 4 finer, 1 in 65+, 3 in 66. (PCGS # 6119) Value $19,000 - 20,000

1844. PCGS graded MS-64. PQ. Boldly struck with nice prooflike fields on both sides. The toning is absolutely jaw dropping here, with vibrant iridescent blue mingled with intense russet and sunset hues to the center, the reverse well matched with similar and incredible vibrancy in the toning. Purchased as a proof by Doug Bird years ago due to the amazing reflectivity, but the obverse die appears different from that used to coin the few known Proofs of this year. In our opinion this is the finest and most beautiful Mint State example for this date. Likely to bring a rather stunning premium for the toning alone, and the quality of the surfaces only add to the mix. Sure looks MS-65 or better. Pop 14; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6245) Value $3,500 - UP

1855-S. Arrows. NGC graded AU-55. This is a rare coin in any grade, although CoinFacts reports they believe 500 or so exist today, these coins are nearly all circulated well into far lower grades. There are a couple of Mint State examples known, but these are clearly outliers. Only a few are known in the AU grades of this date, and despite a mintage of nearly 130,000 pieces these just simply did not survive. Here is one of the finer examples seen, with light even grey toning on both sides. Rather sharply struck too, wiht full definition Liberty's dress folds and the eagle is sharp as well, right down to his knobby claws. The surfaces are pleasing as there are no detracting nicks or marks from brief circulation. Clearly, this coin has been carefully preserved since the day it was plucked from circulation as a fine representative of this early San Francisco half dollar. This is a condition rarity that should not be overlooked by any serious date and mint collector. Pop 2; 7 finer at NGC. Value $6,000 - 6,500

Lot 1147
1870-CC. NGC graded EF-45. Popular first year "CC" Mint half dollar. This is one of the most popular of the 1870 Carson City opening year coinage because its actually more available (in a relative sense) than most other denominations. The total mintage came in at only 54,617 struck,--but, from that beginning only 200 or so coins exist today. There's a couple of mint state examples, and similarly only a few that rate as high as EF45 like the present offering. In grades of EF and lower these are available for a healthy price. Here is a lovely steel to medium gray coin with scattered darker flecks on both sides. The wear is light and even, limited to the highest points of the design. This is a true numismatists coin, a condition rarity at the high end of the scale. Pop 8; 13 finer at NGC. Value $11,000 - 12,000

Lot 1177
1921-S. NGC graded MS-65. The key date to the Walking Liberty half series, and one of the most challenging coins to find in gem or finer grades. The 1921-S is more available in lower circulated grades than other low mintage dates, but in grades like this gem there are precious few around. The technical break starts at the modest VF20 level, where only small numbers are reported to exist in the population reports. For this amazing coin, the surfaces are virtually perfect, with no distrating nicks or marks in the fields or on the devices. The strike is rather sharp too, with good separation on the thumb of Liberty and her hand, with some of the skirt lines present too.

In 1921 the American economy took a rapid dip, after the return of the soldiers from WWI, things seemed to be okay, but then there was a sharp economic downturn in 1921 affecting many areas such as farm goods, and other non necessities. Demand for new coins dropped quickly too, which is reflected in the mintages of these 1921 half dollars. The mintage was 548,000 pieces, but nearly all entered circulation and very, very few were saved in Mint Condition. Gems like this are a real challenge to find. Interestingly, as the economy dipped the solution of easy credit came to pass. With new inventions like ice boxes, toasters and irons that plugged into wall sockets, and easy terms from the stores that sold them, soon the Roaring 20s was born. However, it was not before these 1921-S half dollars were well circulated by and large. A nice frosty coin. Pop 21; 2 finer in 66. Value $65,000 - UP
